Which is the best natural perfume?

In our opinion, the answer would be, of course, Jones & Modha! But seriously, the best natural perfume would be one that is made with integrity, no green washing. It is possible to use the word ‘natural’ without being transparent about ingredients or intention. Look around the supermarket shelves next time you visit and count how many food and drink producers use the word ‘natural’. And then check out the ingredients. Their interpretation of natural may not be the same as yours.

What does Natural mean?

The Oxford Dictionary defines natural as:

“existing in or derived from nature; not made or caused by humankind.”

So one could argue that anything that has been created by humankind is not natural…. And as perfume is created by humankind, we couldn’t classify it as natural. However, few people would be satisfied with wearing only crushed flowers, plant oils or essences on their skin, as these can be pretty unsophisticated. However, we could broaden the definition and insist on wearing perfumes made with all natural ingredients. So ingredients that are found out and about in nature.

Natural cleaning products

When you’re next reaching for a cleaning product because it has the word natural in the name, you might want to check out the ingredients to see how they’re defining the word. You might find that a percentage of the ingredients are natural. And that might be enough. It’s the same with beauty products and your expectations. Many of us would prefer not to use anything that harms the environment or our skin. And it should be pointed out that some natural ingredients can harm both! Harvesting ingredients from unsustainable sources for example is not good for the earth or environment, and some natural plant ingredients can cause allergic reactions. We agree it can all get very complicated!

What is natural perfume made of then?

If we’re using our Oxford Dictionary definition, then natural fragrance should be made with plants and flowers that are ‘existing in or derived from nature” - and hand on heart, this is what we use for blending Jones & Modha. We also want it to be an eco perfume - so we make sure the ingredients are consciously sourced. We do really care about being aligned with nature and being transparent in all senses.
